One of the first things my grandfather did upon his arrival at Ellis Island was to learn the language; not just to fit in, but to secure an independence. He was extremely influential in my life, teaching me so much. I remember multiple lessons regarding the importance of being "my own person," to not put myself in the position of having to rely on others.
He was so correct, those lessons so valuable, I was compelled to teach my children the same. I'm so happy I did because not only has their independence proven to be valuable, various outcomes are that much more rewarding.
Dayna, you are one of the coolest people I know.
